The master’s program “Women Studies, Specialization in Woman and Family” is a comprehensive educational package in line with the regulations and decisions made by the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology of Iran. This program is an interdisciplinary specialization with a sociological approach. In addition to sociology, other courses covered in the field of women and family include jurisprudence and law, psychology, history, art, health, research methods, and cultural, economic, social issues.

One of the main goals of this program is to train committed theorists and experts on policy-making and planning in the field of women and family. The program also seeks to enhance research in the field of women and family through in-depth Islamic studies, and to analyze and criticize different Islamic theories and perspectives on women and family issues. The scholarly approach and social, cultural attitudes toward women and family are also revised and enhanced. This makes it possible to expand knowledge and explain social sciences aligned with Islamic principles (Islamic psychology and sociology in the field of women and family) .

The graduates of this program obtain a true understanding of Islamic perspective in the field of woman and family within the social and intellectual framework of Islam based on the original resources of religious thoughts. Moreover, they become competent in addressing scholarly questions on women and family issues. They will also be able to conduct scholarly research on the social topics related to women and family.

Holding a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent is sufficient for enrollment in this program. The previous degree of the applicant must be verified by the consulate of Iran in the issuing country. Also, matching the applicants’ previous field of study with the current program is not necessary. Upon establishing the applicants’ scholarly competency and the committee’s agreement, the applicants are eligible to study in this program regardless of their previous field of study. Previous publications including books, research papers, and journal articles can positively influence the committee’s judgment.

The master’s degree in “Women Studies, Specialization in Woman and Family” takes 2 years and is accomplished in 4 academic semesters; each semester lasts for 16 weeks. Every one-unit class requires one hour of instruction per week. In case the department decides that extra time is needed for a student to pass the prerequisites or finish the thesis, at most 2 extra semesters will be added.

The MA program “Women studies, Specialization in Woman and Family” consists of 44 credits: 12 credits in core subjects, 12 credits in prerequisites, 16 credits in fundamental subjects, and 4 credits for the thesis.

Courses such as “Jurisprudential rules of woman and family”, “Women’s health”, and “Philosophy of women’s rights in Islam” are among the prerequisite courses. The courses “Woman in the Qur’an”, “Psychology of women”, “Sociology of gender”, “Principles of the family law system in Islam”, and “Woman in religions and schools versus Islam” are included in the basic courses. Also, courses such as “Family in Islam”, “History of family developments and its theories”, “Women’s rights and responsibilities in the Islamic legal system” and “Pathology of women and family issues” are among the core courses in this program.

  • Total cost of the course for Iranian students who are admitted through the national entrance exam or internal university exam (2021-2022): 16 million tomans (The fee covers the student’s educational costs and does not include living expenses such as food and accommodations.

The applicants must submit the following documents to apply to the online master’s programs of the University of Religions and Denominations:

  • A completed application form.
  • An electronic copy of the identification document of the country of origin.
  • An electronic copy of the diploma or its equivalent and a certified Persian, English, or Arabic translation of the transcript.
  • A recently taken photo of the applicant, size 30x40mm.
  • Applicant’s CV indicating education and work experience (optional).
