We abandon the Neo-Confucian practice of presenting Chinesephilosophy by lumping philosophers into schools as ifno dialectic operatesbetween the schools in the theory development. Hansen’s starting point and his area of greatest insight is usually language. The function of language was by and large prescriptive guiding discourse for practical observes affairs. Hansen that the starting point for interpreting classical Chinese philosophy is to appreciate its focus on human conduct and social practice. In the place of Confucianism, Taoism, Mohism, and dialecticians, He suggests the followinggrouping: 1) Confucius and Mo Tzu, 2) Mencius and Lao Tzu, 3) ChuangTzu and Hsun Tzu. Chinese philosopher’s dealconstantly with theory of language. But their theory of language ispragmatic as opposed to semantic theory. Hence it is right that somethingcentral to the Western tradition is peripheral in the Chinese traditionsemantic concerns in philosophy of language.
