Chinese and Japanese Religions

The current volume is a translated compilation of two sections from A New Handbook of Living Religions, offering an introduction to four distinct religious traditions: Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and Shinto. The first two religions, Confucianism and Taoism, originate from China, while Shinto is an indigenous Japanese religion. Buddhism, on the other hand, is shared by both Chinese and Japanese cultures, having undergone significant developments in China before spreading to Japan.

This book offers valuable information on the history, teachings, scriptures, and various sects within each of the four religions. It provides an in-depth exploration of their development and interconnectedness throughout history. Additionally, the book examines the religious landscape and culture of both China and Japan, spanning from ancient times to the present day
