During his short reign (680-683 AD), Yazid bin Muawiyah committed many brutal crimes, great sins and great taboos, but the most brutal and most inviolable was the killing of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him). (peace be upon him) and his family and his good companions in the famous battle of Karbala.

The importance of the research lies in showing the fact that Yazid was responsible for the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) from the Sunni and Shiite sources and finding the most prominent differences and contradictions contained in these sources and differentiating between what is true and weak in the mentioned chains of transmission in order to obtain a fruitful, complete and useful result that shows the truth as it is.

As for the objectives of the research, they stem from the basis of addressing a major historical problem, namely, the contradictions contained in the Sunni sources and an attempt to find the most prominent weak chains of transmission on the subject, as well as proving Yazid’s responsibility for the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) from Sunni and Shiite sources.

As for the research problem, it indicates that what Muawiyah did to his successor on the throne of the state, which sacrificed in order to consolidate its pillars expensive and cheap, blood and money, and standing before the great companions, led by Imam Ali (peace be upon him), and snatched it from the teeth of the internecine war with his cunning and cunning, with his sword and money. Although some of the Companions acknowledged the situation he had reached, some of them showed their objection and resentment from time to time.

The original question of the study, what is the responsibility of Yazid bin Muawiyah for the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him)? As for the original hypothesis, it is that Yazid bin Muawiyah is the first responsible for the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), and his order to kill the martyred imam’s grandson (peace be upon him) has been proven in many narrations and sources, and the evidence for that is abundant in Sunni and Shiite sources.

The study also used the historical descriptive method in presenting the facts and historical events that pertain to the study and then analyzing them in an objective and graphic manner to reach the desired results about the study.

The results of the study were also characterized by showing evidence and actions that confirm the direct involvement of Yazid bin Muawiyah in the killing of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, through messages and orders, as well as the despicable actions that he and his men performed in the family of the Prophet, peace be upon them, and in the Levant.
