The reasons for revelation are questions, good and bad deeds, and what happened during the era of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family, after which verses or surahs of the Noble Qur’an were revealed. It is clear that such a thing plays a major role in understanding the meaning and purpose of the verses. But the problem is that despite the clarity of this matter, we see the commentators and scholars of the Qur’an differing in the use of narrations that refer to the reasons for revelation or not using them. And the sayings range from the impossibility of understanding the meaning of the verses without knowing the reasons for their revelation, to Explanation does not need to know the reasons for descending degrees. The current discussion, which seeks to investigate the role of the reasons for revelation in understanding the purposes of the verses, provides an overview of this knowledge and its issues and proves: Although knowing the reason for revelation has an important role in understanding the meaning and purposes of the verses, the interpretation of the verse and understanding its intent does not depend on knowing the reason for revelation for several reasons, including: The percentage of the number of verses that have a reason for revelation is very few out of the total verses of the Noble Qur’an. It does not prove reliable for many of the narrations of the reasons for the revelation What has been reported about the reasons for revelation is the jurisprudence of the early commentators, and the reason for revelation is not an act of fact, that is, they saw – conjecture and conjecture – a link between a verse and its credentials without being a witness or a reliable narrator of the revelation of the verse in that event. The Qur’an is the book of guidance and it is – on its own tongue – a clarification of everything, and it is not permissible for the clarification to depend on what we do not find. Therefore, it is possible to reach an understanding of the purposes of the verses and the interpretation of the Qur’an without knowing the reasons for revelation, but rather on the Qur’an’s approach to the Qur’an, and the evidence for this is many interpretations that do not use the reasons for revelation, and despite that it is considered one of the considered interpretations by the scholars of the Qur’an. It appears that it is necessary to revise the criteria for response and acceptance, and the accounts of the reasons for revelation, as well as their treatment. It is necessary to direct the attention of researchers in the sciences of the Qur’an to modern methods of understanding and knowing the historical context and the atmosphere in which the Holy Qur’an was revealed.
