Epistemic responsibility regarding beliefs is a dilemma of contemporary epistemology. In this context, it seems important that making beliefs and accepting beliefs’ duty are correlated. Theorists have discussed about different aspects of the dilemma of an arbitrary or non-arbitrary belief’s process or our responsibility to achieve a true belief. Epistemic duty issue developed by Muslim philosophers may be restructured based on the contemporary epistemology. Thereafter, considering the importance of this issue and its impact on the religious epistemology, it is worth analyzing the mentioned dilemma. Brilliant attitude of Ayatolah Javadi Amoli’s as a contemporary philosopher provides a situation in which this study restructures and analyses his point of view regarding epistemic duty issue based on internalism and externalism approaches. Ayatolah Javadi Amoli whom almost considers internalism factors in epistemology and emphasizes on importance of basic beliefs impacts on other beliefs, claims that evidences are essential for basic beliefs of ones’ ideology and states that they are under ones’ arbitrary control. On the other hand, the externalism approach of epistemology emphasizes on the process of achieving of beliefs’ cognitive subjects instead of epistemic duty. In this approach, it seems that epistemic duty is ignored, however another type of epistemic duty is emerged which is assumed as intermediary epistemic duty. Indeed, Ayatolah Javadi Amoli deals with knowledge process and external factors, furthermore, he considers that intellectual virtue and vice are effective in structuring of cognitive subjects for achieving knowledge, as Zabszeski’ virtue-based duty. But, he states that intellectual virtue is not the only cause of access to true. Thus, we are responsible for providing evidence and justification for a belief, also, we are responsible for passing essential steps to make beliefs based on non-epistemic considerations. Effects of intellectual foundations of the philosopher including the innate theology approach based on obtaining a task-oriented covenant from a human being and his orbital responsibility to reach the goal and destination of certainty, his anthropology approach based on soul’s substancy movment and active role schematizatin and the epistemic character of cognitive subject with different aspects of feelings and emotions, moral virtues and vices, and soul,s beliefs and acts for achieving knowledge and the epistemology approach based on the position of epistemic intuition and text beside intellect, in structuring his epistemic duty theory can be analyzed.
