The researcher – through his study called (The Historical and Social Memory in the Iraqi Story: Mahmood Jandari as a Sample) – attempts to reveal the memory in the short story as modern literary element which can show the Arab’s role in accepting such foreign elements so that they may describe the bitter or sometimes sweet Arabic reality، as the memory is joined to the past. Thus، the researcher tries to connect between the memory in the past and the present so that it can be continuous in all times and shows the text features by recalling or searching in the individual and group memory consciously، and also through revealing all silent elements deposited inside Jandari’s memory. The researcher concluded the clarity of the narrator’s tendency to link the past through the historical figures he brought up in his stories to approach the real present. History and literature are intertwined around human existence, its development and intellectual changes in a movement linking the past and the civilized international present, shortening the distance between time and place, producing through the historical memory of the characters in literature. Creative in the aesthetic features of the story, revealing in a stylized manner the deep and ideal secrets of history and the reality in linking them. The researcher depended on analytic، interpreting and descriptive method، as he faced some difficulties too like rare sources regarding the memory usage in the story literary and the Arabic short story. He also tried to theorize the concept of memory linguistically، psychologically and philosophically، and shows the relation between it and the usages of memorizing، telling، the individual and group memory in the short story. This research dealt also with social memory – the memory of Ego and the Other – the memory of dogmas and traditions، the historical memory – the historical character and the historical place – and the historical events as a part of the main memory on which the story and the mythic memory، place and character can be built.
