Functional analysis is one of the most suitable ways to study cultural and social phenomena. In this method, phenomena are examined based on their function. Religious mourning is one of the most important cultural phenomena in our society. This phenomenon, which has gained more excitement after the revolution, has many functions for the Iranian society. In this research, we have tried to show the functions of mourning in Iran after the revolution in three levels: micro, intermediate, and macro. This study shows that mourning in the Iranian society has micro-functions in three levels such as proximity to the field of sacred affairs, increasing moral density and increasing tolerance. It has some functions in the middle level such as social cohesion, and strengthening the agreement on collective values, finally, in the macro level it can have some functions like justifying political and social structures.
