Imamiyah in Rey is of long history and old age but until the period of the fourth century it was in isolation and under pressure by the opponent individuals and groups and some of them for preserving their existence and identity had to embark on precautionary dissimulation. But from the fourth century, contemporary with Al-e Buye (Buyid dynasty) for being Shiite but having the Shiite denomination of the kings and most of its governors and rulers, they came, to a large extent, out of isolation and even attained social position and political authority. In this period, Imamiyah, based on thought and doctrinal bases and utilizing political and social bases and grounds in Rey, by creating relationships and developing pertinences from the sort of tolerating other Islamic and non-Islamic factions and denominations along with incessant efforts and struggles by its authorities in the thought and belief and even social and political areas could attain considerable successes and achievements. Scientific, cultural and political development and prosperity in the form of great Islamic civilization is an obvious evidence and instance for these achievements and successes. With the downfall of the Buyid Dynasty and the rise of intolerant Sunnite dynasties of Ghaznavides and Seljuqs and the Khwarazmshahian which lasted until the half seventh century, due to prejudices and violent and foolish encounters of some kings and rulers like king Mahmud of Ghaznavi and Toghrul and Khwajih Nizam al Mulk of Seljuk, the social and political position and authority of Imamiyah temporarily was demoted and even that civilization and scientific grandeur power came to a standstill from its increasing speed. But before long due to the capability and inherent characteristics of Shia school and knowledgeability and the talents that Shia scholars exhibited of themselves, the previous honor and authority again together with the Shiite, Islamic, scientific and civilizational grandeur returned. In these periods, Imamiyah due to ruling social and political circumstances and dignities changed its relational approach from tolerance which was specific for the political and social state and circumstances of Buyid Dynasty to the interactional and sometimes oppositional approach in various political, social, cultural and doctrinal areas which was appropriate for the era of Ale Buye and by means of the authority emerging from its influence and its presence in different social, political, cultural and doctrinal areas succeeded to attain positive and vital achievements.
