{"id":357,"date":"2021-11-24T00:34:33","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T21:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/entest.urd.ac.ir\/?page_id=357"},"modified":"2026-06-28T11:30:04","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T08:00:04","slug":"islamic-studies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/urd.ac.ir\/en\/faculties\/islamic-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty of Islamic Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Faculty of Islamic Studies was established in 2025 through the merger of the Faculties of \u201cShi\u02bfa Studies,\u201d \u201cQur\u2019an and Hadith,\u201d \u201cHistory,\u201d and \u201cStudies of Muslim Nations.\u201d This faculty offers one program entirely in English, and some of its programs are delivered online at the master\u2019s level and in a research-oriented format at the doctoral level.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Department of Islamic History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Department of Islamic History is one of the academic departments of the Faculty of Islamic Studies. It focuses on the study and analysis of historical events in the Islamic world from the emergence of Islam to the present. The courses offered in this department emphasize the historical analysis of political, social, and intellectual developments in Islamic societies. Among the subjects taught in this department are the history of the Umayyads, the history of the Abbasids, the history of Shi\u02bfism, history in the Qur\u2019an and Nahj al\u2011Balaghah, and the history of the Ottoman Empire.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Graduates of this department conduct research through scholarly articles and academic theses that can contribute significantly to facilitating interreligious dialogue and promoting mutual understanding among religious communities. As a result, the department trains researchers who, with a deep understanding of the rich and complex history of Islam, can serve as specialists in cultural, academic, and outreach institutions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The programs offered in this department are:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Master\u2019s programs: \u201cIslamic History\u201d and \u201cHistory and Civilization of Muslim Nations\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">PhD program: \u201cIslamic History\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Department of Islamic Studies in Foreign Languages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Department of Islamic Studies in Foreign Languages is one of the departments of the Faculty of Islamic Studies. This department offers a master\u2019s program titled \u201cIslamic Studies in English.\u201d Its main focus is to train graduates with a deep understanding of Islam who are able to present and communicate Islamic teachings internationally through the English language. All courses in this program are conducted in English.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">. Among the subjects taught in this program are \u201cIslamic Studies in the West,\u201d \u201cQur\u2019anic and Hadith Studies,\u201d \u201cComparative Theology,\u201d \u201cMethodology of Islamic Knowledge,\u201d \u201cIslamic Legal System,\u201d \u201cPhilosophy,\u201d and related topics.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Department of Qur\u2019anic Sciences<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Department of Qur\u2019anic Sciences is another academic department within the Faculty of Islamic Studies. The courses offered in its programs are mainly oriented toward theoretical studies in Qur\u2019anic sciences. The primary goal of this department is to train researchers who, through a deep understanding of the Qur\u2019an, are able to articulate and analyze sound scholarly perspectives based on the Qur\u2019anic text and authentic narrations.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among the subjects taught in this department are the principles and methods of Qur\u2019anic interpretation, Qur\u2019anic vocabulary and proper names, the history of hadith, the history of the Qur\u2019an, the miraculous nature of the Qur\u2019an, thematic interpretation (tafsir mawdu\u2018i), and critical studies of interpretive schools and methodologies.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The department offers two master\u2019s programs, \u201cQur\u2019anic Sciences\u201d and \u201cTafsir and Qur\u2019anic Sciences,\u201d as well as a PhD program in \u201cQur\u2019an and Hadith Studies.\u201d The doctoral program is also offered in a research\u2011oriented format.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Department of Shi\u02bfa Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Department of Shi\u02bfa Studies is one of the academic departments of the Faculty of Islamic Studies. The main focus of this department is the study of various branches within Shi\u02bfism, including both existing and historical groups, through a theological and historical approach.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main objective of the department is to develop a comprehensive and scholarly understanding of Shi\u02bfism through academic research aimed at uncovering theological and historical truths, rather than pursuing purely promotional objectives. Nevertheless, graduates of this department also gain the ability to effectively present and explain Shi\u02bfi teachings.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among the subjects taught in this department are the concept and historical emergence of Shi\u02bfism, Shi\u02bfi teachings with a focus on addressing contemporary questions and critiques, Shi\u02bfi theological schools, Shi\u02bfism and Islamic civilization, Shi\u02bfism and rationalism, the doctrine of Imamate and related theological and historical debates, and the history of Shi\u02bfi theology.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Programs offered in this department include:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bachelor\u2019s program (online): \u201cShi\u02bfa Studies\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Master\u2019s programs: \u201cShi\u02bfa Studies \u2013 Kalam\u201d and \u201cShi\u02bfa Studies \u2013 Sociology\u201d (offered both in-person and online)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">PhD programs: \u201cShi\u02bfa Studies\u201d and \u201cShi\u02bfi Kalam \u2013 Imamate\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Department of the History and Branches of Shi\u02bfism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Department of the History and Branches of Shi\u02bfism is another department within the Faculty of Islamic Studies. This department offers two programs titled \u201cBranches of Shi\u02bfism\u201d and \u201cHistory of Twelver Shi\u02bfism\u201d at both the master\u2019s and doctoral levels. The master\u2019s programs are offered both in-person and online, and the doctoral programs are also available in a research\u2011oriented format.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">This department focuses on the study of different Shi\u02bfi Branches and orientations, the historical development of Shi\u02bfism, and its cultural and civilizational contributions. The aim is to introduce the intellectual and rational identity of Islam and Shi\u02bfism at an academic level. The courses offered in this department emphasize theoretical and methodological studies in Shi\u02bfa studies.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among the subjects taught are analytical studies of the history of the Imams, branches emerging from Shi\u02bfism, the political history of Shi\u02bfa communities, Shi\u02bfism and Islamic civilization, Shi\u02bfism in Orientalist studies, the history of Zaydism, the history of Isma\u02bfilism, and the history of the Imami tradition.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Department of Political Science<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Department of Political Science is another academic department of the Faculty of Islamic Studies. At present, this department offers a master\u2019s program in \u201cPolitical Science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The courses offered in this department are mainly oriented toward political and legal studies. Given that many students are interested in political history, political science, and legal studies, the curriculum focuses on topics such as systems of governance, analysis of political activities and ideas, and constitutional frameworks related to political behavior.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The field also draws on the major subfields of political science, including comparative politics (including regional studies), international relations, political philosophy and thought, public administration, and public law.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Department of Studies of Muslim Nations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Department of Studies of Muslim Nations is another department within the Faculty of Islamic Studies. This department focuses on examining the social and cultural conditions of Muslim countries and analyzing the political and social transformations of the Islamic world.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The research orientation of this department is designed to analyze the factors, roots, and capacities shaping developments in Muslim societies.
