Dr. Vahid Sohrabifar, a faculty member of the University of Religions and Denominations, delivered a lecture at the International Conference of “Sovereignty, Legitimacy, and Authority in Twelver Shia Islam”, hosted by the University of Birmingham, UK.

Dr. Sohrabifar attended this international conference presenting the article: “Beyond the Secular-Religious Duality: the Concept of Expediency in the Islamic Republic of Iran”, which explains the position of expediency as one of Imam Khomeini’s innovations.

In addition, he explained the role of expediency as one of Imam Khomeini’s innovations in solving the modern problems facing the Islamic jurisprudence.

Sohrabifar then analyzed the results of this jurisprudential idea and the formation of the Expediency Discernment Council of the System in Iran, concluding that the idea of expediency can solve many modern jurisprudential problems; thus, it is beyond the common secular-religious duality.

This virtual international conference was held by the University of Birmingham of the UK in English on Thursday and Friday May 20-21.
